SANYA, CHINA – JAN 26, 2010 – The Ritz-Carlton, Sanya, joins forces with Sea turtles 911 to save three endangered green sea turtle hatchlings. The turtles were rescued from local market by Sea Turtles 911, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of sea turtles in Sanya, Hainan Island, China. A significant “Welcome to your new home” kids party was held in hotel’s Kid’s Pool, more than 20 kids and their parents were invited to learn sea turtle conservation on Hainan Island. All kids are named “Sea Turtle Guardian Angel” by GM Mr. Goget with a mission: To save and protect sea turtle and ocean throughout your life , and three of them won naming competition with new names to three sea turtle hatchlings: “Sisi”, “Lydia” & “Clyspher”.
The warm coastal waters surrounding Hainan Island provides critical foraging ground for green, hawksbill, and olive ridley sea turtles. Despite all three species being listed as critically endangered on the China Species Red List, a vast amount of illegal harvesting occurs reducing their populations at an extraordinary rate. Sea turtles face a host of other obstacles further diminishing their rate of survival including, fisheries by catch, plastic debris ingestion, and habitat loss. The Ritz-Carlton, Sanya together with Sea Turtles 911 is actively working to alleviate the pressures that threaten sea turtles in China.
Sea turtles are most vulnerable in the early stages of their life, it is estimated that one out of a thousand hatchlings will survive. The Ritz- Carlton, Sanya is providing a home for these tenacious creatures until they are strong and large enough to be released back to the wild. Like all guests at The Ritz-Carlton, the turtles will have luxurious accommodation in an aquarium placed in the Kids Club area of the resort. The Ritz-Carlton, Sanya has taken a commendable role to promote and educate guests about threats to sea turtles in the South China Sea, while increasing the hatchlings chance for survival.
Guests are invited to come say hello to “Sisi”, “Lydia” & “Clyspher” at The Ritz-Carlton, Sanya, and learn about sea turtle conservation on Hainan Island.
