THE RITZ-CARLTON ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

Back to previous

A striking German Imperial style high rise in the heart of Berlin’s vibrant Potsdamer Platz; an authentic restoration of a Morris Lapidus Art Deco palace in trendy South Beach; and a classic version of Rocky Mountain parkitecture in exclusive Bachelor Gulch, Colorado, just a few examples of the architecture and design that distinguish the collection of The Ritz-Carlton hotel and resort locations worldwide.

Founded in 1983, the company’s first decade of hotel openings centered on traditional European elegance in scenic settings including Naples, Florida and Laguna Niguel, California. As it expanded into Asia in the early 1990s the company began designing hotels and resorts to reflect the region. One notable example is The Ritz-Carlton, Bali Resort & Spa, where thatched roof villas and open air restaurants captured the serenity and beauty of Indonesia’s Island of the Gods. New locations in Moscow, Powerscourt, Beijing, Turks & Caicos, Dallas and Tokyo will draw on area architecture and design giving guests a regional sense of place when staying at the hotel.

Over the past several years, The Ritz-Carlton has expanded its design philosophy to embrace styles from traditional to cutting-edge modern. It has won the admiration of preservationists for the effort of bringing old buildings back to life. The Ritz-Carlton, Philadelphia, a turn of the century bank in the heart of downtown, was carefully restored down to the last detail, including the original mahogany board room whose windows overlook City Hall and the statue of William Penn.

In Washington, D.C.’s beautiful Georgetown neighborhood, what was once a 1939 landmark incinerator building was converted into a boutique hotel, complete with the original smokestack and a sleek exterior design. In South Beach, the golden era of Miami Modern (MIMo) has been brought back to life with the opening of The Ritz-Carlton on fashionable Collins Avenue. The original cruise ship inspiration of famed architect Morris Lapidus was a sensation when it opened in 1953. The complete restoration of the former DiLido Hotel is now one of South Beach’s best “see and be seen” retreats for celebrities.

In Germany’s capital city, The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin has won architectural raves for its Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) inspired design with contemporary accents reminiscent of the art deco skyscrapers that dominate the skyline of New York and Chicago. The design of the hotel is a fusion of modern trends and classical European elements in the heart of the iconic Potsdamer Platz. One of the hotel’s most unique features is the Desbrosses restaurant, once located in a small French town, relocated to Berlin, then authentically reproduced and placed in the hotel.

On the slopes of the Colorado Rockies, The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch pays tribute to the era of the American West when the original grand lodges of the national park system first appeared in the early 1900s. Using regional materials including hewn logs, timbers and fieldstone, the resort captures the look and feel of the parkitecture design first made famous by architect Robert Reamer.

The Ritz-Carlton, Jakarta is designed according to the principles of Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese practice for creating balance and harmony, guest accommodation are among Jakarta’s most spacious, and baths feature floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.
